When The Community is Stopping By: A Guide for Holding Successful Historic Home Tours: Historic Home tours require advance planning, some initial funds, and many, many volunteers. This book is designed to help neighborhood associations and organizations design and implement a successful historic home tour. It is planned in chronological order from pre-tour planning to after-tour cleanup, and includes sample budget forms, homeowner agreements, and other documents, based on ARCH’s 35 years of home tour experience. Every tour is unique, and organizations are encouraged to do what works best for them. This is a valuable new tool in the historic preservation toolbox. 64 pages, ring-bound. $20.00.
Old Order Amish in Indiana: A Context Study of a Traditional Culture in the Midwest: Efforts to survey and document potentially historic sites in areas of historic Amish settlement have been inadequate and have failed to identify significant character-defining features of this traditional culture group. Failure to consider these culturally significant aspects of Old Order Amish when surveying historic sites and structures, has led to a situation where Amish-related resources may not be protected from the potentially adverse affects of federal undertakings that other similar sites and structures receive. This study includes a basic introduction to the Old Order Amish communities of northeastern Indiana, and a county-by-county survey of the patterns of character-defining features found in each community. 31 pages, ring-bound. $12.00.
Indiana’s Historic Suburban Developments: A Hoosier Heritage of Community Design: Following the National Park Service publication of a new guide for nominating historic suburbs to the National Register, ARCH embarked on several projects using the guide. In the process, it was determined that a statewide survey of historic suburban developments was needed to provide a context for such nominations. Indiana’s Historic Suburban Developments provides an introduction to such early suburban types as the Railroad and Trolley Suburb, Early Automobile Suburbs, and more modern types as well. Over 40 Indiana suburbs are cataloged, with full-page color photos of many National Register-listed suburbs in Indiana; particularly Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. 82 pages, ring-bound. $25.00.
